Khan el-Khalili is a well-known bazaar and souq (or souk) in Cairo's historic center. The bazaar district, named after one of Cairo's several historic caravanserais and established as a center of trade during the Mamluk era, has since become one of the city's main attractions for both tourists and Egyptians. It also houses many Egyptian artisans and workshops that produce traditional crafts and souvenirs. Historically, the name Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building in the area; today, it refers to the entire shopping district.
